March marks National Athletic Training Appreciation Month and throughout the IAAM, athletic programs have been putting a spotlight on the phenomenal athletic trainers who provide the care and attention that ensure student-athletes are competing at their highest level.
Created in 2001 by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the month-long celebration aims to raise awareness about the important work athletic trainers are doing regarding injury prevention, immediate care, and rehabilitation.
“Whether it’s keeping our athletes healthy, helping them recover from injuries, or simply being a trusted presence on the sidelines, Liz Vaught and Gina Misuraca are mentors, encouragers, and an essential part of our school community,” praised Kara Carlin, Director of Athletics at Friends School. “Beyond their medical expertise, Liz and Gina are the heart of our athletic program. Their dedication and unwavering support make an incredible impact on our student-athletes every single day.”
Several IAAM schools took to social media during the month to thank and highlight their invaluable athletic training staff.
Roland Park Country School’s athletic department applauded the work of trainers Erin Frey and Angela Palmeri, noting that they, “couldn’t agree with the NATM (National Athletic Training Month) tagline more – you are our ‘Champions in Health Care’”.
Glenelg Country School touted, “Happy Athletic Training Month to all the Athletic Trainers out there! A big Dragon thank you to our very own ATC (certified athletic trainer) Carlos Negron, for keeping our student-athletes safe and rehabbing them back to health!”
At times an athletic trainer’s duties can extend beyond campus. Recently, McDonogh School’s Jay Dillion traveled with girls’ lacrosse to Virginia, while his counterpart traveled with the boys to Florida.
“We’re proud and grateful for their dedication and support accompanying our teams over spring break,” said Mickey Deegan, McDonogh’s AD.
At Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Cougars hung a poster in the training room so that their trainer could feel appreciated all month long.
“Steve Weiss has been such a huge addition to Our Lady of Mount Carmel,” enthused Athletic Director Jesse Thomas. “He is loved by the kids and coaches for his hard work and dedication to the school.”
Bryn Mawr commended their top-tier athletic training duo, Dr. Eva Martinez and Alexis Carter. Athletic Director Tina Veprek credited the pair for being “attentive and professional” as they put “the health and well-being” of Mawrtian athletes front and center.
“Being an athletic trainer in a high school is an incredibly rewarding experience as it’s not just about treating injuries, but about building relationships, supporting athletes through their challenges, and celebrating their successes,” said Dr. Martinez. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that my role makes a meaningful impact on the athletes I serve. March, with its special recognition of athletic trainers, is a heartwarming reminder that the dedication and care I put into my work truly matters.”
A Message from the IAAM:
